Why are schools still segregated in 2022?

Unfortunately, the majority of high-poverty schools have a high population of people of color. This sets people of color at a large disadvantage, they do not have as much funding, teachers, supplies, and materials. Many students' grades suffer because of the lack of funding for their schools. In this day many people would like to say that schools are integrated, segregation was ended decades ago. Unfortunately, it is not that easy, segregation in today's school system is majorly overlooked. So why are schools today still segregated? Well in this module we listened to a lot about regaining, previous to this lesson I was pretty unaware of redlining and the major effects it has on black families today. Redlining is a system that was used in the 1900s to keep black families in "poor" areas. They were laws by the government that required them to live in these specific communities, and within these communities, they were majorly overcharged for property and housing. They would not be allowed to take out loans to help buy a house, or if they did get a loan, they had to pay outrageous amounts, or else their home would be taken from them. While white people had the privilege to gain generational wealth and sell their property for higher values black families struggled and stayed in the communities that were forced onto them. As a result of this many communities, today are still integrated because the generations stayed where they were put. Because school funding is based on the property taxes in these districts, the poorer communities get less funding for the schools, and statistically, people of color are the majority of these low-income areas, which sets them back in their education. Why arent public schools today teaching about redlining and its effects on today's society? Even though redlining is now illegal how can we help all of the families that are still being affected by the aftermath?
